Center thinking about admitting girls into Sainik schools
Subhash Bhamre, Minister of State for Defence said that currently center is mulling on proposal to give admissions to the girls in Sainik Schools and National Defense Academy. "There is a suggestion from the (Parliamentary) Standing Committee, there have been PILs and many members have also suggested... Sainik Schools prepare students for NDA, and the NDA is not taking girl cadets. This is a matter under consideration whether to give admission to girls in Sainik Schools as well as the NDA." Bhamre said while replying to a query during Question Hour in the Lok Sabha. The Minister also said that at present there are 26 Sainik schools and 21 more are at the different stages of approval.Of these 21 schools MoU for nine schools have been signed, in-principle approval have been given for three schools and remaining nine schools are under the process of examination.He further told that 64 more proposals have been sent to the Ministry and they are also under consideration.All the Sainik schools are maintained by the Sainik School Society under the Defense Ministry.The Sainik schools were conceived in 1961 by then Defense Minister V.K. Krishna Menon to prepare the students from early age for entry into the NDA and Indian Naval Academy.
