India's first genomics lab to be opened at IIT-KGP
IIT-KGP is finally providing the facility for genomics lab whose main aim is to teach the students about the basic life science techniques and to let them execute the experiments. The students from all engineering branches can benefit from the lab as it will be available 24x7. Second year students will be able to access the lab and learn about the techniques including molecular biology, microscopy-based observation, bioinformatics and protein structure and function. However, the students from third year will be allowed to run their own experiments with biotechnology, bioscience, chemistry, medical science.Inside the lab, faculties from tech, computer science and engineering department will act as a mentor for the students. Lab head Sudip K Ghosh said "the lab will be equipped with all necessary equipment for study under various subjects including specialty sequencing, biochemistry and microscopy. It will be the first lab of its kind in India". As of now, IIT-KGP is also planning to collaborate with the Tata Medical Centre for interdisciplinary medical research with the aim to promote collaboration and interaction among the faculty, students and medical professionals.
