Sex education to be included in the NCERT revised curriculum



Under the National Council for Educational Research and Training's (NCERT) new revised curriculum, students from class 1 to 5 will be given sex education and will be taught about the sexual abuse in detail. In teaching children about the sensitive matter, help of educational films and counselors will be taken.Why sex education from early age? According to the reports from DNA, a senior NCERT official said "Once children grow up, they are more conscious of their surroundings and can take care of themselves but younger children are more vulnerable, hence we are pondering over making the curriculum for younger children stronger. They will be taught about child sexual abuse through educational films and characters with whom they can relate. They are already told what is a good touch and bad touch, but we need to teach beyond this". In order to teach children about sexual abuse a film named Komal will be made part of the curriculum. The film is about a girl named 'Komal'- age 9- who lie any other children of her age plays with friends and studies until an overfriendly neighbor sexually abuses the girl and she withdraws herself from the world. The film shows how it not the child faults and tells children how they can protect themselves when someone tries to abuse them.A curriculum named 'Health and Physical Education; has been developed by the NCERT and has been prescribed to all schools.
