Parents are being forced to buy branded items from schools and vendors

Parents are being forced to buy branded items from schools and vendors

In last several days, several schools affiliated with the CBSE have received warnings which stop them to do anything which can put additional financial burden on the parents, such as 'profiteering' from the sales of books, uniforms and stationery items. One another such incident came to light when parents from across 19 schools marched to the office of the deputy director of education where they demanded action to be taken against the schools against additional charges which are charged by the schools. Now a days, buying stationary and uniforms from the vendor appointed by the school has become a norm .A parent of Class IX students of Bishop's school said "the school provides a “sack full” of school stationery. Why will my daughter need so many pencils at this age? But her stationery kit has it. We have never received a list… so I don’t know what the cost of these books in the open market is…"At Indira National School textbooks are not being sold in the school but parents are being redirected to the only book seller in Aundh, where books are available.“These are workbooks customized by the school, so we have no option. But as far as notebooks are concerned, we noticed that the price of the school notebook… is much higher than the same notebook in the market…,” said another parent. Some schools have also opened an e-commerce business where they are selling the school kits and stationery items. Parents of Poddar International School are being redirected to www.shopforschool.in where they can order the entire kit. Some schools are now selling standardized bags and shoes for the children. Shiv Singh another parent from Mundhawa based school said "the institute demands that students wear a particular kind of shoes, of an international brand, and has even specified a shoe store in Camp area from where these can be purchased."While many calls in the various schools went unattended, the DPS principal said that standardized bags and shoes were being sell on the premises in order to ensure discipline.

Lucknow University students doing internship University claims they are placed

Lucknow University students doing internship, University claims they are placed

Often when students from university are hired by good and reputed company, it speaks of the relations of the university with the hirers but, in case of Lucknow University, the university's placement cell has taken things a bit far. LU students are doing internships in organizations but the university is claiming them to be placed. The placement cell issued a statement which said that its 249 students have been given job offers in different organizations and that 24 of its students from the journalism and  mass communication have been hired by a private TV channel. However, the underlying reality of the news was that the students from journalism and mass communication have been hired as interns without any offer letters and pay packages. The same is the case with the other 249 students. The director of counseling and placements, Prof Madhurima Lall, when contacted, told this correspondent: “Normally students who are interns in different organizations are absorbed and get final placement there. We are hopeful that many of our bright students will be recruited there soon.”When Prof SP Singh, university vice chancellor was informed about this he said that he would talk to the placement director as it is unethical to claim that students who are interns have actually been hired. He further said "I will ensure that in future university should pass on correct information about final placements".LU is struggling with the placements from quite some time due to lack of good placement cell.

There may be a regulatory mechanism for the CBSE schools

There may be a regulatory mechanism for the CBSE schools

Union Minister, Prakash Javadekar, stressing on the need for having a regulatory mechanism for the schools affiliated to the CBSE said that schools from now own will be made accountable for their quality of education and charging of the unreasonable fee is concerned. “There are CBSE schools in the country and I welcome private investment in (the field of) education as quality education is needed. But it has come to light that once they get affiliation, there are no restrictions on these (CBSE) schools. “Even the state government officials cannot go to the CBSE schools. I will put an end to this and there will be accountability as all these schools have to offer good education and charge reasonable fees,” he said. The HRD minister was present in Pune on the occasion of inaugurating a two day western region workshop organized by the HRD ministry. The main aim of the workshop is to share the innovations and best practices for imparting education in schools.“It is good that private schools are coming, but all these institutions should not become business... We are in the process of formulating a policy (for CBSE schools) as we want co-existence of government and private schools to improve the quality of education,” he said.Later talking to the reporters, Minister said, private schools should focus on the quality of education instead of commercializing this education sector. "The fees should be reasonable. There are complaints from parents that all these schools charge unreasonable fees,” he said.He further added "state board schools have a dedicated education department, which has an established administrative (regulatory) mechanism. However, the CBSE does not have such a system and there is a need for this kind of system as the number of these schools is increasing in the country. We are thinking on how to go about it".

This new invention to make cab ride safer for women

This new invention to make cab ride safer for women

In an attempt to make cab riding safer for women, students and faculty from Kolkata based Institute of Engineering designed a contraption which makes it possible to prevent undesired access to women passengers. "The device has two aspects. One part, a steel mesh, separates the driver's chamber from the passenger. The other part comprises two safety latches in the two passenger doors that are welded to the body of the car. Unless the woman passenger opens the latch, no one can access the back seat doors and get in," the Institute's Director Satyajit Chakrabarti said. The contraption is priced less than Rs 1,000 and is designed by the students and faculty members of the mechanical engineering department of the institute.Chakrabarti, explaining the motivation behind this invention said "Most of the incidents related to cabs happen when the driver or miscreants access the backseat where the woman passenger is seated. So a barrier could thwart the perpetrator."Now the institute is approaching cab aggregators such as OLA and Uber along with the government transport departments to introduce the innovation in public domain.

Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) to be held once a year by the CBSE

Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) to be held once a year by the CBSE

Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET), which is conducted by CBSE to determine the appointment of teachers for class I-VII will now be conducted by the CBSE only once per year.Lately, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has telling the HRD Ministry about how it is overburdened by the responsibility of conducting various national level exams every year such as JEE-Mains and NEET.Recently, board proposed conducting the exercise of holding NET exam only one a year instead of twice. The exam is held for recruiting assistant professors twice every year. “When all major competitive exams are conducted once a year, why CTET or NET should be conducted twice? They are massive-scale exercises which require massive resources and in a way reduce seriousness of candidates since the fear of wasting a year isn’t there,” a senior official said. After consulting and discussing with the officials from CBSE, the HRD Ministry and the National Council for Teacher Education (NCET), it was decided that the CTET exam, like all other competitive exams, should be held only once a year.Currently in twice a year scenario, the exam is held every February and September. A total of nine lakh applicants appear for the exam. However, the month, in which the exam will be held, is to be decided yet.“The arrangement of the CBSE conducting NET and CTET is likely to continue till the proposed National Testing Service (NTS) is set up by the government for the conduct of all exams,” the official said.

Common Engineering Entrance Exam goes on hold

Common Engineering Entrance Exam goes on hold

Common Engineering Test, which was proposed by the AICTE, has been put on hold by the HRD ministry till it reaches a final consensus. Earlier, in March it was announced by the AICTE that the single window national level entrance exam will be held across the nation for getting admission into various engineering colleges from the next academic session in 2018.But this move faced the opposition from the states of Tamil Nadu and West Bengal governments following which HRD ministry felt that the states must be taken on board in this regard. “It is important to have consensus on the introduction of a common exam. So the plan has been put on hold for now,” an official who did not wish to be named said.“The common counseling provisions also need to be discussed with the states,” the official said. The cue for the common engineering test was taken by the HRD ministry from the NEET exam, which is a single window exam for getting admission into medical and dental colleges. The exam structure for getting admissions into engineering colleges is not uniform in India as CBSE conducts JEE-Mains exam for getting admissions into engineering courses. Some states have their own tests while some private colleges conduct their own exams.

Teacher sold her jewelry in order to provide world class facilities to its students

Teacher sold her jewelry in order to provide world class facilities to its students

Once India's former President and renowned scientist, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam said "Teacher is a very noble profession that shapes the character, caliber and future of an individual. If people can remember me as a good teacher that will be the biggest honor for me."These words once again came to life when one such teacher from Tamil Nadu went ahead and sold her jewelry in order to provide world class facilities to its students. Upon facing the choice of being a teacher or a high paying manager in corporate company she chose to teach the children in order to provide quality education to the kids. This teacher's name is Annapurna Mohan, a teacher in government school. As a teacher in Panchayat Union Primary School she teaches class 3 students in Tamil Nadu. While speaking to India Today Education she said "I am really glad to see many people are appreciating the noble cause that I have initiated. When I joined the school, the state of the students was not good as they couldn't even speak good English. By the time of five years, I really started knowing the real needs of the students and analyzed their performance". Speaking about the training process of the teachers she told that all teachers are given some basic training in phonetics. After doing my training I began teaching the students in same manner following the same methodology and began conversing in English with the students to help them improve their communication skills.English was hindrance for the students"During the course of time I understood that my students are very talented, but English was becoming a hindrance for them. So, I decided to give more importance to English and followed phonetic methodology and now the outcome of it is fantastic," said Mohan, speaking about teaching English to students. When asked about selling the jewelry she told, "I started posting the activities of my students on Facebook. Gradually, many people started noticing it and appreciated this effort. Some of them even started sending gifts such as badminton racquet and donations. After getting gifts from people across the country, I ensured that my students should study in a better infrastructure and speak fluent in English". Mohan also shared a message with other teachers saying that all the teachers of the nation have great responsibility on their shoulders. If students are channeled properly they can do wonders and teachers and students are the hope of this nation. She also urged all the teachers to come together in helping India develop further.

HC called for a response from UGC and JNU over M.Phil. and Ph.D. notification

The Delhi High Court, over the issue of University Grants Commission (UGC) issuing a notification which puts the cap on number of M.Phil. and Ph.D. students, has called for a response from Central Government, the UGC and JNU on a plea which challenged the UGC notification. A division bench comprised of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice Anu Malhotra has asked the government, University Grants Commission and Jawaharlal Nehru University to file their responses on the plea. After the notification was issued, the plea against the same was filed by the 'Students Federation of India' along with some aspiring M.Phil. and Ph.D. students from Delhi University and JNU. The plea challenged the constitutional validity of the UGC Regulations 2016 which came into effect from July 5, 2016. The students are against the UGC notification as it threatens the future of the students because according to the said notification, students won't be able to find the research/supervisor guides. Students also argued that the potential ramification of the issued notice is more than that as it will also limit the number of admissions of aspiring research students. The plea termed the regulations of the notification as ''irrational, unreasonable and arbitrary'' and said that this is complete opposite of the Fundamental rights and Directive principles of the State policy.

Ad-hoc teachers in DU go on hunger strike for permanent status

More than 200 teachers in DU who were appointed on ad-hoc basis went on hunger strike demanding that university absorb them as a permanent faculty member. These teachers were from various colleges ,which are functioning under the Delhi University, and observed a day long hunger strike at the Arts Faculty building where they used the opportunity to address their peers about the irregularities going on in the Delhi University. "There are a total of 200-250 teachers who are observing a day-long hunger strike... And another 1,500 are associated with the movement," Himanshu Singh, Assistant Professor (ad-hoc), Satyawati College (Evening), told IANS over the phone. "Some of us have been teaching us for more than ten years, some even more. Why are we not good enough for permanent status, when the university can trust us with teaching students, their evaluation, and their careers?" Singh added. He also said that ad-hoc teachers were hired by the university following the same process which they use to hire permanent teachers.Another ad-hoc teacher, Prem Kumar from Satyawati College said "they will also march to the Vice-Chancellor's office and present him with a charter on their demands."Even the DUTA (Delhi University Teachers Association) also extended their support in favor of the protesting ad-hoc teachers.

CBSE might conduct NET exam only once a year

CBSE might conduct NET exam only once a year

Seeing the poor performance of students in the National Eligibility Test (NET), CBSE proposed to conduct the exam only a year in a recent meeting. As of now, the NET exam is conducted twice a year-- once in January and other in July. The main purpose of the exam is to select the eligible candidates for the post of assistant professors and Junior Research Fellow. The exam is conducted on a national scale and is conducted in the streams of arts, humanities, social sciences, and commerce.Statements from the CBSE "The National Eligibility Test (NET), a qualifying exam for recruitment of college and university teachers, may not be conducted twice a year as the CBSE has proposed that it should be made an annual exercise." On Tuesday, UGC also announced that it had convinced CBSE to conduct the NET entrance test which is due in the month of July. Seeing the overgrown concern and protests from the NET aspirants, the decision was taken. According to the reports, for the first time since its inception, NET exam was facing uncertainty after CBSE expressed its inability to conduct the exam which is due this July.Statements from official sources"While conducting the exam once a year will make candidates more serious about it, resources can also be utilized judiciously as holding a national-level exam is a massive exercise. However, the idea is at a very nascent stage," a source said"The CBSE has proposed the idea keeping in mind that only 17 per cent of the registered candidates take the exam and only four per cent of them clear it," the source addedCBSE is yet to notice the official notice for the upcoming NET exam which usually out by April first week.

After introducing Chetan Bhagat Novel Delhi University introduces 'Facebook Writing'

After introducing Chetan Bhagat Novel, Delhi University introduces 'Facebook Writing'

Almost everyone opens the Facebook at least once a day and the first thing it asks from its every user is 'What's on your mind'. A status update option which allows people to update anything they like from feelings to activities and from text to pictures and videos. But most of the time these updates are just random with no or little meaning. But now Delhi University's English department has taken it up so that students can now have the option of studying 'How to write posts on Facebook'. Delhi University's English Department has drafted a curriculum which includes the option of 'Facebook Post Writing' as a part of the four components of the course ''Academic Writing'.Head of the English Department, Christel Devadawson said "We want to give students every option possible, such as academic and professional writing of different kinds. We have noticed that students have had to go outside the university to acquire such skills, at some cost of their own". She further said that it is a digital age and the skill might come in handy as most of the students use digital media in their everyday life in one way or another. However, many students are not happy with the move. Anshula, a Delhi University student said that she would prefer to study pure forms of literature and poetry rather than spending time in learning the aesthetics of Facebook posting. "It could lead to the degeneration of the academic sphere," she added. Not only students but teachers also have their own concerns"Facebook is a tool for people to share their opinions and thoughts openly. This course would control the way students write on social media, regulate their thoughts. You would make them think of the form of their posts, or language of their writing, which ends up controlling content as well. It's restrictive to their ideas," says Siddharth Kanoujia, an English Professor.

NCERT books to be made compulsory by the HRD for the CBSE schools

NCERT books to be made compulsory by the HRD for the CBSE schools

Following the controversy of the female body issue in class 12 CBSE textbook, HRD Ministry is planning to make the NCERT textbooks compulsory for all the CBSE schools. Another reason for the this move is the overwhelming response from over 2000 private schools for making the NCERT textbooks compulsory. The step was taken after thoroughly conducting the capacity of the Education Council.Advice from Prakash Javadekar to schools According to the reports, HRD minister Prakash Javadekar recently advised schools to stick the textbooks published by National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) instead of going for the textbooks published by private publishers and authors. But the same has not been made compulsory due to the reporting of shortage of books in the market from parents and school side. Complaints from the parents regarding the booksNot only the controversial text but, parents also made complaints to the CBSE and HRD regarding the fact that schools have been insisting on costlier books from private publishers even if NCERT books are available in the market. Most of these complaints were registered through the official link which the CBSE had created on its official website for bringing any issue/problem into CBSE's notice regarding the NCERT textbooks. CBSE said that there is no shortage of the textbooks and this year the board is planning to publish around 4.25 crore books."This year, there was a problem because parents were complaining about books being highly priced. We appealed to all schools to register and give their intent. Over 2,000 schools have registered and we have supplied NCERT books in those 2,000 private schools," Javadekar told reporters on the sidelines of an event.

Confirmed! CBSE NET to be held on time: UGC

Confirmed! CBSE NET to be held on time: UGC

After the protests and concerns overgrew from the NET aspirants, the University Grants Commission (UGC) on Tuesday said that Central Board of Secondary Education has now agreed to conduct the entrance test on time. Students were worried about the exam as the notification for the exam to be held in July is released in April. But till date yesterday there was no such development from the CBSE side which made the National Eligibility Test (NET) aspirants worried about the exam's schedule. The anxious aspirants started demonstrating the protests against the UGC. Every year, approximately 5 lakh students appear for the exam of NET. According to the reports "it was for the first time in 33 years that the NET was facing uncertainly after CBSE had written to the human resource development ministry earlier this year expressing its inability to conduct the exam. The Board conducts the exam twice a year-- once in January and the second time, in July."Issue has been solved "NET will happen in time -- at max a week here and there. We have sorted out the issue with CBSE over the NET exam," VS Chauhan, the officiating chairman of the UGC said on the sideline of an education event in New Delhi. Chauhan told that CBSE, UGC and HRD ministry conducted a meeting over the exam issue and in the meeting it was made clear that the previous government had issued an executive order in which CBSE was entrusted the responsibility of conducting the NET exam. Earlier CBSE had said that due to lack of manpower and capacity crunch it won't be able to conduct the NET exam this year.

Websites of some prominent Indian Institutions such as Delhi University (DU) Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi were hacked by the Pakistan based hacker group. When visited, instead of serving the usual information the websites were serving the videos about the alleged atrocities by Indian security forces in Jammu and Kashmir. The hacker group known as PHC, after hacking the websites posted some pro-Pakistani slogans on these websites and said: "Nothing deleted or stolen. Just here to deliver  message to the Indians."The message asked the Indian if they have even the slightest clue about what their army forces are doing in Kashmir. There were slogans of 'Pakistan Zindabad' everywhere on the hacked websites. Websites of University of Kota, Army Institute of Management and Technology, Defense Institute of Advanced Technology, Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences, and National Aerospace Laboratories did not open or could not be reached. Afsar Khan, a member of the website management team for the AM said that website for the admission was not affected as its hosting is being done locally."ERNET (Education and Research Network) India Server that hosts websites has been hacked. They are working on it and it will be restored within 3-4 hours. Our website for admissions, which is hosted locally, is working fine and we won't face any problem on that front," he said.DU in its statement said that the university website was inaccessible from outside as the domain name was pointing to some other website incorrectly."The problem was detected and immediately rectified by contacting ERNET, who has provided the domain name for University of Delhi," the statement said.Kalyan Bhattacharjee, IT-Delhi spokesperson said that that there was nothing wrong with their personal server as it was ERNET that was hacked."Our server is intact. We are registered with the ERNET -- under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. They have a DNA server and has our addresses," he said."It is this address location that was tampered with by some external agency," Bhattacharjee said, adding that the ministry is investigating the matter.

Super 30 founder encourages not to let poverty kill talent

Super 30 founder encourages not to let poverty kill talent

Anand Kumar, founder of the educational program 'Super 30' and mathematician urged to all that poor kids who are talented must be given adequate financial aid so that because of poverty they are not deprived of the opportunity of higher education. Anand Kumar was present at the Foundation of Excellence's (FFE) first New York chapter gala at the Taj Hotel where he made it clear that there is no shortage of talent in India. "All that is required is to spot the talent and provide it the needed support to give proper shape to the talent," he said. Kumar point that there are many talented students in the nation who could not even get the prose education because of the poverty, let alone higher or technical education. By supporting such talent we can give back to the society. "Poverty should not come in the way of education of talented students. It is in this light that I value the contribution of FFE immensely. But, it should not confine its support to just higher or technical education; there is a need to support student right from the primary or secondary stage," he added. "All Indians working across the globe join hands for the noble work. It could have a transforming effect to immense satisfaction of all those associated with it," he added. All in all it boils down to providing the right opportunity to the right students at the right time. Super 30 program was started by Anand Kumar back in 2002 under his  Ramanujam Institute of Mathematics where 30 meritorious students are selected from the economically backward section of the society and are trained for getting admission into IITs.

DU told its colleges to fill the vacant teaching posts

DU told its colleges to fill the vacant teaching posts

The overdue process of filling the vacant teaching positions in DU may start soon as the officials have asked the college authorities to issue the advertisement for the same. The application process will be online. In the same regard a letter has been sent to all the colleges of DU to fill the vacant positions of the assistant professors. A link for the centralized application form has also been sent to the colleges. No form will be accepted offline this time. “The governing bodies of colleges have to send details of vacant positions and reservation rosters to DU for approval. Few colleges have already done it. After approval, it is the college’s responsibility to screen applications and fix interviews. DU only sends the name of experts when asked by the colleges’ governing body chairperson. This time, the form is so designed that a candidate needs to only change the college name and apply to all colleges where his/her subjects are taught. Earlier, the API score of particular candidate used to differ from college to college, creating huge amount of grievances and complaints. Now a candidate has to fill the same form and it will automatically calculate the API score of candidates,” Devesh Sinha, dean of colleges, said. There are total of about 10,000 vacant positions in the DU. These posts were previously filled by the ad-hoc teachers. In some colleges even the post of principal is lying vacant and officials have asked the DU to advertise for the post of principal as well. The vacancies in the university will be filled according to the guidelines of the UGC.

Common Hindi Teaching Scheme to be formulated by HRD for the Universities

Common Hindi Teaching Scheme to be formulated by HRD for the Universities

"Common Hindi Teaching Scheme" may soon be implemented by Universities and Higher education scheme. Under the scheme universities which lack the Hindi Department may also be asked to establish one. Also, all the educational institutions will also be asked to fix the minimum level of Hindi education. The move is likely to attract the criticism and opposition from the universities and students as students are already protesting against it by petitioning President Pranab Mukherjee against 'forceful Hindi imposition.' "To give autonomy in the field of higher studies some laws have been framed by the Central government and state governments under which in some universities and higher educational institutions, English is the only medium of instruction," the presidential order said. "The HRD Ministry should work out an action plan for implementing Hindi teaching scheme in all universities/higher educational institutes and initiate the process of implementing a common law and table it before both the Houses of Parliament," it added.Already HRD ministry has been told to take note of the universities where Hindi Departments are missing. "It should encourage them to establish Hindi Departments so that they can extend help in imparting education through Hindi medium," the order said, adding, minimum level of Hindi education must also be fixed in all educational institutions. The panel also noted the financial aid given to Hindi institutes is only for the name sake and HRD ministry has been told to take effective steps to check the problem and increase the grants of the students.

NCERT plans to build classrooms for children with special needs

NCERT plans to build classrooms for children with special needs

Laying the emphasis on the learning requirements of the children with special needs, NCERT has designed a "pioneering" reading material in the form of booklet and has released the print material under the name 'Barkhaa series'- a supplementary 'Graded Reading Series'. The series has been developed by the Department of Elementary Education at the NCERT. Talking about the Barkhaa Series, the Director of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) Hrushikesh Senapaty said " This project has been started on a pilot basis and keeping all the principles of universal design for learning in mind." About the booklets Each book is equipped with the Braille and other tactile components which will help in catering the needs of the children with learning disability, speech or language disorder, visual impairment, autism, attention deficit, hyperactivity disorder and cerebral palsy, among other disabilities. The series is a pedagogic tool whose purpose is to help the children in learning at the foundation level. There are 40 illustrated stories across the five themes such as relationships, birds-animals, musical instruments, games and toys, around us and food. There are also four different reading levels in the book. "Our motto is one book for all. We do not want to label children and these books are a baby step in the direction of having real inclusive classrooms, where children share the same space and same books, without feeling insecure or discriminated against," Anupam Ahuja of the Department of Education of Groups with Special Needs at the NCERT said. Equal treatment for all the students "We need to accept diversity and treat all children in the same way. Keeping a few children in separate classrooms, just because they have separate traits, is not the way forward," Ahuja said. When the question was asked about the availability fo the NCERT text books director said "14 states and union territories have borrowed rights to publish and print books from us. States like Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand have also shown interest in doing so. There is no shortage of textbooks. Also, we target to print 4.25 crore books this year. The numbers of vendors have also increased from 400 to 680."

DJs are no longer allowed in farewell and fresher's parties in Ramjas College

DJs are no longer allowed in farewell and fresher's parties in Ramjas College

Students of the Ramjas College are no longer allowed to play DJ's and loud music streaming on the occasion of fresher and farewell parties. This order came in from the acting principal of the Ramjas college who also instructed that any or all functions in the college must end by 4 pm and two teachers, one preferably female, must stay till the function ends.KiPermission will be required for organizing the eventsAccording to the reports from the India Express, PC Tulsian who is the current acting principal of the college issued a notice saying that before organizing any function inside the college premises, students will have to seek the permission from the college. The request for the permission must come along with the recommendation from a teacher of the concerned department.Official words of the principal"It is appalling what the students do. We have received many complaints in the past. I will not go into the details but there have been instances where people have complained of misbehaviour. Why are DJs or loud music needed? This is a college, not a club. Even I was a student of this college. We didn't need to make noise to throw farewell parties. People have to maintain decorum. Also, examinations are starting soon and there should be no noise. Students in hostels need peace and quiet to study. Practical exams have already started and theory exams will start on May 9," Tulsian said.Objections from studentsThe notice did not go well with the students as they raised the objections and said " This is bizarre! Why can't we play music during our functions? And why must a function end by 4 pm? These rules make no sense for college students. The college itself uses speakers for the functions it holds. Why should the students be not allowed? "
