In order to focus more on practices and less on theory, IIT-D to revamp the curriculum

Showing concern over the growing cases of suicide at IITs, the IIT-Delhi decided to introduce changes into its curriculum so that students can tackle the pressure of studies. The new curriculum will also help in keeping the suicide numbers to possible minimum. The move came into effect after HRD asked IITs to take effective steps to curb the number of suicide cases. The revised curriculum will be applicable from next year will focus more on experiments and practical approach and less on theory. “There is a constant efforts at the IITs to help students cope with stress but there are always one or two cases. All IITs are undertaking initiatives but nothing seems to be enough,” IIT Delhi Director V Ramgopal Rao said.He also told that during an internal survey it was found that there was a severe mismatch among the expectations between that of the students and instituions. “By the time students come to IIT, they are tired of endless studying and they want to enjoy a bit. We, unfortunately, do not offer any scope for that,” Rao said. He also said that proper guidance is important for the freshers because once the develop cold-feet and backlogs it becomes impossible for them to survive another three years in the institute.“Hence a major rehaul was necessary to reduce the theory component and introduce more hands-on training so they can simply go to the lab and try applying what they have learnt so far,” he said.
