Making Hindi compulsory in schools: SC declines the plea

On Thursday, the apex court, declined the plea which had asked for making Hindi Language compulsory in all schools till standard 8 declaring it as a national language. After the plea was filed many people, speaking other languages, asked why their languages are not being taught in the schools. Seeing this response from people, bench of Chief Jusitce bench of Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul asked Ashwini Kumar, the petitioner, to withdraw the plea. The petitioner, Ashwini Kumar,is a leader in the ruling 'Bharitya Janta Party'. The bench asked him why he did not approach the government as his own party is in power?A senior counsel R.S. Suri addressed the court on behalf of the petitioner to which court remarked "that if the petitioner is asking for Hindi, someone else would ask for Sanskrit and "you and me will say about Punjabi".The petitioner referred to three language formula 1986 under which he was seeking the compulsory teaching of the Hindi language.Petitioner further added "that the Ali Sardar Jafri committee that was set up in 1990 made recommendations modifying the three-language formula under which in Hindi speaking states three languages comprised of Hindi, Urdu or any modern Indian languages and English or any other modern European language".But, till date not all states have implemented this three-language formula.
