A 164 year old school to be shut down where Mahatma Gandhi studied

Gujarat education department is all set to shut down an old age school from where 'Father of the Nation- Mahatma Gandhi' received his secondary education. The school will be shut down and in its place a museum will take place. The school is named as 'Alfred High School' and was built by the nawab of the erstwhile Junagadh state. The school was opened in 1875 and Gandhi studied in the school from 1880 to 1887.World class museum to take its placeAccording to the reports, in August 2016, the state government decided to convert the Mohandas Gandhi Vidyalaya formerly known as 'Alfred High School' into a world class museum. Under the resolution students studying the school will be shifted to other schools.Reva Patel, the district education officer in charge of Rajkot, told The Indian Express, ''We are complying with the government instructions and have started giving school leaving certificates to the students".Students not performing wellShe said, shutting of the school began on April 29. The officials told that students have been unable to perform well in the board exams and admissions in the school are dipping down with each passing day. "The board results were not improving despite (the government) trying various options and the number of students was also going down every year." In 191 the school was renamed as 'Mohandas Gandhi Vidyalaya' and in 2013-14 no student cleared the class 10 board exam.Patel said: "Recently, we wrote to parents informing them about the decision of transferring students to alternative schools. We have started getting replies and most parents have agreed to get their wards admitted to Karansinhji High School."
