Stop commercialization in schools: Delhi HC directs CBSE
Delhi High Court directed the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to make sure that the schools affiliated to board are not indulging in any kind of commercial activities. A plea was filed in the court which pointed out how schools are using their buildings as a commercial venue for selling books, uniforms, stationaries and other accessories. Social worker Sunil Pokhriyal urged the court to issue the directive in this regard.According to the reports, last month, CBSE also urged its affiliated schools to stop their involvement in any kind of commercial activities such as selling of books, uniforms and stationeries etc.Complaints from the parentsMany parents and stakeholders have approached the CBSE with the complaint about schools selling books, uniforms, stationeries etc. items in the school or outside the school through selected vendors. However, the schools have been directed by the Board to follow books published by the National Council of Education and Research (NCERT)."The Board received reports and complaints regarding the pressure exercised by schools on children and their parents to buy textbooks other than (that of) NCERT," the plea said."A pair of shoes, which is available at around Rs 500 in the market, costs Rs 1,200 to 1,500 when sold through the school's store," alleged the plea.
