Reduce anxiety before exam by checking likes on Facebook

Reduce anxiety before exam by checking likes on Facebook

Anxiety is a common symptom during the exam and all students face it, intelligent or dull, alike. But according to the new research at University of Illinois, US, reading supportive comments from friends on Facebook just before giving the exam can help students reduce their anxiety. How the research was carried out? For the study researchers gathered few undergraduate students who were under anxiety and asked them to take support of their friends online by reading their messages prior to a simulated exam. This process helped in reducing the anxiety levels by 21 percent. The research was a seventeen minute expressive writing exercise. All the students were asked to solve two programming problems by writing and running codes. The anxiety levels were measured by the researchers using 'Cognitive Test Anxiety Scale'.The participants were from the computer science background. Robert Deloatch, a graduate student at the university said "We found that only the students who received supportive messages from their Facebook network showed a significant decrease in anxiety and an increase in their performance on our simulated exam". Research analysis After the research it was found that nearly 41 percent of the students suffer from test anxiety. Also, the anxiety could be at peak when the students have answer open ended questions.Once their anxiety levels were reduced they were able to perform well in the exam. A day before the actual experiment, students requested their friends on the social media to give them encouragement and support in the form of likes, comments or private messages about the upcoming exam they are going to participate in.
