IIT KGP to spread awareness about the free online education among the students of eastern India

In order to spread the awareness about the free online education being offered by the IITs through the National Program on Technology enhanced Learning (NPTEL) among the students and teachers, the IIT Kharagpur is now planning to approach the higher education institutes in Eastern India.NPTEL is a joint initiative of the IITs and IISc Bengalru through which these institutes offer around 160 courses on various subjects like agriculture, computer science, management studies, mathematics, basic science, engineering and humanities.This year more than 5 lakh students have enrolled for the NPTEL course but, out of these only 7 percent are from the Eastern India.“The biggest problem for NPTEL courses is that not only the students from eastern India, but also the colleges and universities in the region are not aware of it,” Anupam Basu, coordinator of NPTEL at IIT-KGP, said.“We are sure if people get to know about the facility and that it is encouraged by AICTE and UGC, there will be many takers,” said Basu, also professor of computer science and engineering.In an attempt to boost the enrolments from the eastern region, IIT-KGP is talking to other institutes in the states of West Bengal, Odisha and northeastern states so that the facility of credit transfer can be made available to the students from eastern states.In west Bengal following colleges are being approached by the IIT-KGP Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of TechnologyVidyasagar CollegeGokhale Memorial Girlsʼ College of Kolkata The spokesperson for the IIT-KGP told that Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Jadavpur University and and Presidency University are also being approached by the institute for the same matter.
