Offer to teach international curriculum in Mumbai BMC schools

While the reports of students dropping out and schools run by BMC closing down are spreading, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to offer international curriculum in 25 of its schools and according to the reports form the officials, BMC schools have received 160 offers from civic schools and other government run schools across the Maharashtra which are interested in offering the international curriculum in the BMC schools. With all the offers, the department is currently working on shortlisting 100 schools of which 25 schools are by the BMC. According to the BMC officials, the new curriculum scheme can bring in the new life to the dying municipal education system. “A number of students are leaving BMC schools to join private English- medium schools. This scheme could attract such students back. Once implemented, this scheme will propel major changes in the education system. We have selected 25 schools that fit the criteria stipulated by the state school education department. I am visiting more schools to recommend them for this scheme,” said Mahesh Palkar, education officer, BMC. The state and the BMC education department are currently working together on a model based on which the 100 schools will be selected for providing the international curriculum. A meeting was also held on the issue on July 7. If implemented the students may have to undergo various exams which will enable them to cope with the international curriculum.
