Hostel fee issue: Discriminatory fee for boys and girls hostel

Hostel fee issue: Discriminatory fee for boys and girls hostel

For over the last one year, the girls hostel at the DU's Hindu College in in controversy due to high discrimination in the fee for the boy's hostel and girls' hostel. The rules are same for both the hostel but the fee difference is more than the double. For girl candidates, the hostel fee is INR 90,000 per year while it's about INR 58,000 for the boys' hostel. Anju Srivastave reasoned that the girls have to pay more because "girls' hostel is not getting funds from the University Grants Commission (UGC). The boysʼ hostel gets funds from the UGC, while the girlʼs hostel does not. The hostel requires funds to be run — and this is the only way to generate them. Also, the womenʼs hostel is fully air-conditioned," said Srivastava. The girls hostel has the capacity to accommodate 156 students on a twin sharing basis while the total number of room in boys hostel are 119. Last year students along with Pinjra Tod raised a movement regarding the huge difference in the fee. Pinjra Tod raised the matter with the Delhi Commission for Women.Delhi Commission for Women wrote to the college to make the fee same and to the UGC to provide funds for the girls' hostel maintenance. However, to this day nothing has happened and the circumstances are still the same.Senior official of the college said " UGC decided not to give funds to the womenʼs hostel as the time to use Rs 80 lakh, earlier given by the commission, lapsed and the funds remained unutilised . This happened during the tenure of the previous principal; since then the college has not approached the UGC for funds."
