SC ordered to halt the admission and counseling process at the IITs

Following the dispute over the grace marks given to the students in JEE 2017 exam, the apex court ordered the IITs and NITs to halt their admission and counseling process."We are inclined to direct that no counseling or admission to the seats in IIT-JEE advance (2017) shall take place until the further order," said the bench of Justice Dipak Misra and Justice A M Khanwilkar. Further the bench also restrained the High courts of the state from entertaining any plea filed by anyone in matter related to admission and counseling. "It will affect the admissions to all institutes which recruit the candidates from IIT-JEE list," counsel for the petitioner D K Devesh explained.The order was issued against the plea filed by three students who challenged the grace marks policy of JEE Advanced 2017 exam saying that it pushed them down in the national ranking list. They objected that fact that grace marks were given to all the students in exam this year because answer key to some seven odd questions went missing. “When grace marks are given to those who did not attempt the questions, it puts those who attempted the question at a disadvantage. The latter spends two-three minutes attempting it while the former, who has not attempted it, uses this time for attempting other questions”, Devesh told The Indian Express.IIT, opposed the heated agreement and filed an affidavit in the court. “It is respectfully submitted that the relief is entirely against equity since the process of seat allocation is going on and 29,425 candidates have already accepted the allotted seats and reported for physical verification of documents,” it said.“It is submitted that in case the ongoing counseling and admission process is disturbed, the admission procedure of more than 36,000 students in 97 institutes under the joint seat allocation program for IITs, NITs, IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology and GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutions) would be hampered”.Attorney General K K Venugopal during the hearing urged that court should suggest a win-win solution in the matter as the exam was taken by large number of students.
