Only 8.18 percent girls enrolled after the first round of IIT-B admissions

Only 8.18 percent girls enrolled after the first round of IIT-B admissions

The first round of admissions at IIT-B is over and so far, only 75 girls have taken the admission, which is 8.18 percent of the total enrollments so far.A total number of 917 students applied for the admission in IIT-B across 16 engineering streams. The total numbers of seats available are 929 except for the three supernumerary seats. Even if all the girls take remaining 15 seats, there percentage still be only 9.6 percent of the total number of enrollments. Director Devang Khakhar said: “A large number of girls who get good scores do not apply for the IITs. We need to understand the reasons behind this”. He further said that a survey should be conducted regarding the situation so that we can understand why the female candidates despite clearing the exams do not take admissions into IITs. “Our women faculties are in touch with some of the candidates. Apart from counseling the candidates, they are also trying to understand their reservations,” said Khakhar. The situation, regarding female candidates taking admissions in IIT is not good. Last year girls formed only 8 percent of the total enrollments among all IITs. In 2015, this figure was slightly higher at 9 percent. This number was 8.8 percent in 2014.  JAB (Joint Admission Board) of the IITs is worried about the low visibility of the girls in the institutes. A panel was also set up to look into the matter and suggest steps to improve the situation. One such recommendation was to add supernumerary seats in the institutions, which was approved the JAB. These seats will be added from the next session and aims to reach 20 percent by 2026.This year a special web portal was also launched by the IITs last month in order to help the aspiring girls get through the admission process. The portal is headed by IIT Mandi director Timothy Gonsalves. He is also the chairperson of the panel studying reasons behind a huge gender gap in IITs.
