Madras High Court issued an interim stay on the CBSE circular
Madras High court recently issued an interim stay on the CBSE circular which has made it mandatory for the schools to use only NCERT textbooks. The move also came as a huge relief to the private book publishers. Passing the order, Justice N Kirubakran said, "In the middle of the academic year, the CBSE cannot issue a circular prohibiting usage of private publishers' books." This move by the CBSE did not receive any warm welcome neither from parents nor form schools because of the acute shortage of the NCERT textbooks in the market. The judge asked the board to find out about the books which parents and children must not purchase from the private publishers and after that direct the schools to guide the parents and children in the same direction. "First of all, CBSE has to be blamed for allowing the schools to buy private publishers' books, without even verifying the quality, voluminosity and other contents of the books. Moreover, when the 2014 circular itself enables the CBSE schools to purchase books both from NCERT and private publishers, the present impugned order, without giving details, cannot be passed. In view of that there shall be an order of interim stay as prayed for,' the judge further added. The order was passed by the judge on a petition filed by the association of managements of 287 private schools, which follows the curriculum of CBSE.
