Now students to take tests on smartphones

Now students to take tests on smartphones

Now days, few colleges in the nation are allowing students to carry their smart phones into the examination halls because in these colleges students may not be able to give their test. For more than one year, students of KJ Somaiya College of the Arts and Commerce are giving their exams on the their smartphones and for this all the tanks goes to the device called 'Offee' which was developed by the alumnus of the college. “Students are issued login credentials. Once in the classroom, they connect to Offee and the internet connection goes off automatically. Questions then download onto the smartphones. The sequence of questions varies for each student,” said Rajan Velukar, provost of Somaiya. Results are declared within seconds of the exam. On the same lines of college Somaiya, two professors from Indian Institute of Technology- Bombay have also developed an app called 'SAFE' (Safe, Authenticated, Fast Exams). These professors are using the app within the campus and they are also in talks with the other schools and colleges that might want to use the app for the exam purpose on their campuses. Colleges are finding many advantages of these solutions. “Studies have shown regular tests help students learn effectively. But large classes make exams expensive and time-consuming for colleges. SAFE is an app that grew out of a need and desire to conduct simple tests on a regular basis,” said Bhaskar Raman, one of the co-developers of SAFE. At Somaiya, the database of the results is also used to improve the teaching methodologies and techniques. “We look at the data to analyse which questions were the toughest, concepts that may not have been clear to students,” said Velukar.
