Education in India is now a commercial product: Ex ISRO Chief

Speaking on the declining quality of education in India, EX ISRO chief said that education in India has become a commercial commodity and political parties are using the educational institutes as a training ground for the future politicians.Statements from G Madhavan "That's why the education system has deteriorated considerably. Result is that the people who come out even after graduation or engineering, they are not employable. They don't have the basic understanding of the subject, don't have the skills for applying knowledge for practical applications and this is resulting in a pathetic situation," he told PTI. "I think basically education has become a commercial commodity these days rather than acquiring excellence in knowledge," Nair added.Spoon feeding of the children Real education is not being imparted to the children who are being spoon fed in the schools and in the name of the evaluation exams they are being given memory tests which is not the scale for measuring one's understanding of the subject. Quality of education is being murdered in the Indian institutions as they are only interested in the increasing the intake of the number of students and earning more money, he said.Commenting on the standard of education of IITs and IISc institutes he said that they have been able to maintain the quality because they only get the best of the students on their campus. But still, they need to rise on the global level.Train politicians in separate institutesPolitical parties who are interested in training politicians must create separate institutes for them and should stop using the educational institutes for this purpose. "Today, there is a bad tendency. There are many political parties who want to use these institutions for building up their cadres, and that should be stopped," Nair said.Learning 10,000 answers by heart will not get you anywhere, he further said.Education should aim for improving one's observation, analytical and communication skills of the students. "These should form the basis of primary education. Once the foundation is strong and you show them the way how to acquire knowledge that is sufficient. There is no point in just doing 10,000 answers by-heart that will not take you anywhere. Education system should be an enabler, that kind of change is required," he said.
