Central Government freezes the funding of 28 colleges of DU

Delhi Government ordered to freeze the funds of 28 colleges of the Delhi University. All these colleges were either fully or partially funded by the Delhi Government. The action was taken by the government as these colleges failed to appoint the governing bodies. The government contacted the colleges 11 times in past 11 months on the issue of appointing governing bodies but communications yielded no results. Seeing this, the government ordered to stop the funding of the 28 colleges by August 1. Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister Manish Sisodia described the delay as “farcical” and “deliberate”. In a series of tweets he said "Hv ordered Fin Dept to stop funding for all Delhi govt. funded 28 DU colleges, as DU not willing to hv governing bodies for last 10 months". “I cannot allow unchecked corruption and irregularities to be sustained on Delhi govt. funds in the name of education,” he added.Earlier, Delhi government alleged that the university's administration I under pressure from the government but they are not constituting the governing bodies of the colleges intentionally.Out of these 28 colleges, 12 colleges are fully funded by the government and the rest 16 colleges receive grant of 5 percent from the government and rest funding is provided by the UGC (University Grants Commission).Registrar Tarun Das of Delhi University was not available for the comments. He is the official spokesperson of the university.
