Vacant seats in IITs are at 4 year high



This year vacancies across IITs toughed a four year high record as still there are 121 vacant seats in the institutes despite having 7 rounds of counseling.There are total 10,962 seats in 23 IITs and this year 121 seats are still lying vacant in various IITs.  Last year, the numbers of vacant seats were 96, in 2015, 50 and 3 in 2014.IIT-BHU has the highest number of empty seats (32) and is followed by IIT-Dhanbad with 23 vacancies.IIT Jammu and Kharagpur have 13 and 9 empty seats respectively.Last year, IIT Varanasi and Dhanbad had similar trends with 38 and 23 vacancies in 2016.In last four year, students used to snap all the seats in IIT-Kanpur and Hyderabad and this year the same case is with IIT-Jodhpur, which does not have a single vacant seat. Last year too, IIT-Jodhpur had only one vacant seat.This year last round of counseling was conducted by IITs on July 19 and admission process was completed by July 25.An IIT official said "the institutes had been asked to discontinue some of the courses that were not attracting students. The IIT Joint Admission Board is likely to meet soon to discuss such courses and take a decision on steps to bring down the number of vacancies."
