Indian educational institutions could not find place in top 20: HRD Ministry

On Thursday, the government said that no Indian educational institution was able to find a place in the published list of global top 20 world class institutes.In a written reply to Rajya Sabha Minister of State for Human Resource Development Ministry, Mahendra Nath Pandey said there is not a single Indian institute in the list of global top 20.This reply came, after questions, on the quality of Indian Higher Education were raised in the upper house of the Parliament. Apart from informing that no Indian institute could find a place in the list of global top 20, Mahendra Nath Pandey also talked about the steps which are being taken by the government in order to ensure quality based higher education in the country. He talked about various norms and regulations set up by the government in order to regulate the technical education in the country. Now, technical institutes require grant of approval before they can conduct new course from All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).“In consonance with the provision of the University Grant Commission(UGC) (Establishment of and Maintenance of Standards in Private Universities) Regulations, 2003, the UGC has already conducted on the spot inspection of 159 out of 278 private universities to assess whether these are fulfilling the minimum criteria in terms of programs, faculty, infrastructural facilities, financial viability, etc, as laid down from time to time by the UGC and other concerned statutory bodies or councils,” read the written reply by the government.Pandey also assured that UGC is taking all the necessary steps in order to ensure that quality education is being delivered in the universities and colleges.
