Petition to exempt Ayurveda and Homoeopathy courses from NEET rejected by the Gujarat High Court

Petition to exempt Ayurveda and Homoeopathy courses from NEET rejected by the Gujarat High Court

Recently, Gujarat High Court rejected a petition, which challenges the rule, which makes NEET test compulsory to get admissions into the Ayurveda and Homoeopathy. The petition was dismissed by a division bench headed by Chief Justice R Subhash Reddy. In the petition some students had challenged the Gujarat Professional Medical Educational Courses (Regulation of Admission) Rules, 2017. The court said "the state was justified in framing these rules making a certain minimum NEET score mandatory for BAMS (ayurveda) and BHMS (homoeopathy) courses". The petitioners challenged the rule saying that until 2016, admissions into the courses like BAMS and BHMS can be taken on the basis of the Gujarat Common Entrance Test (GUJCET). Minimum 50 percent marks in the class 12 board exams is the criteria to sit in the exam. According to the petition, the petitioners appeared for the GUJCET and not for the NEET.NEET was introduced by the government of India last year. It is single window national level exam for the candidates who want pursue their career in the field of medicines and health. The government lawyer said that "on March 8, the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board had issued a press note informing GUJCET will be conducted only for engineering and pharmacy courses".Before that, a news report on February 10, informed everyone that any admission in medical (MBBS), dental, homoeopathy, ayurveda and naturopathy courses will be given on the basis of NEET scores.
