BSEB plans to give 50% objective questions in board exams

BSEB plans to give 50% objective questions in board exams

After seeing the poor results of students of class X and class XII in 2017, BSEB has decided to give 50% objective questions in all papers in the board exams of 2018.In order to ensure the transparency, OMR sheet will be given to the students and all the objective questions will have to be answered on the OMR sheet. Earlier, only science papers used to have 40 percent objective questions. The pass percentage of the students of class X is 2017 was 50.12 percent and in class XII it was 35.25 percent which was the worst in the last two decades.Since the toppers scam, the board has introduced several corrective measures such as barcoding of answer sheet and now it is looking to improve the pass percentage of the students in the board exams. BSEB chairman Anand Kishor told reporters here: “We have decided to change the examination pattern for Classes X and XII from 2018. All theory papers will have 50 per cent objective marks. There will also be short questions of two marks each.” Students will have to answer questions on OMR sheets only, he said. “We are changing the examination pattern with two targets — to improve pass percentage and ensure meritorious students getting high percentage can compete with students of other boards.”

Indian students are second highest in numbers in US universities

Indian students are second highest in numbers in US universities

According to the US Consulate General, Public Affairs Officer, and Director of the American Centre, Jamie Dragon Indian students are second highest in numbers in the US Universities. Speaking to the reports, Dragon said " As per the statistics, India is no. 2 behind China. Going by the last academic yearʼs figures, there are around 1,66,000 Indian students studying in the US while China has 3,20,000 students approximately. China surpassed India about six years ago and the gap (between the number of Indian and Chinese students going to the US) is increasing." The US official also mentioned the fact the Kolkata is also legging behind other metro cities in sending the students to the US institutions. “I do not have actual statistics on Kolkata students. But just looking at the size of the visa offices in the country, Kolkata has one of the smaller offices. My sense is that the domain in Kolkata is not that high compared to other metros,” Dragon added. On Sunday, 21 universities from the US participated in the USIEF-EducationUSA University Fair and interacted with the graduates, under-graduates and school students.“Engineering and business are the two most popular subjects among foreign students at our institute. We have about 4,500 international students. Every year we get about 500 to 600 fresh international students. China is number one and India is number two in terms of sending foreign students to our institute,” said Katherine Mangum, coordinator of international recruitment for Iowa State University. The fair was organized to help the city students to get more information about the accredited US universities and next it will be held in Hyderabad, followed by day-long sessions in Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

OSM is solely not responsible for the delay in MU results: MeritTrac

OSM is solely not responsible for the delay in MU results: MeritTrac

MeritTrac, a testing service company, which conducted the assessment of answer sheets for the Mumbai University said that the company should not be solely blamed for the delay in the results of Mumbai University. For the delay in the results of the Mumbai University, the company has faced a lot of criticism for its services and professionalism. The company is 100 percent subsidiary of Manipal Global Education (MaGE). In an e-mail response to the IE, Nagendran Sundararajan, Executive Vice President of MeritTrac, said, “Any large OSM (onscreen marking) project is transformational in nature and requires meshing of systems between the Institution (sic) and the service provider. There are many other factors and elements coming into play that will decide the pace of the evaluation process. Therefore, one cannot assume that OSM solution is the only factor that will decide the time frame or accuracy of exam results and make allegations on the OSM system.” The results of the summer semester are expected by June but due to the delay this year, the results were declared in September and the last round of the results was declared in October.Assessors alleged that there were problems in linking the students' answer sheets to the correct question paper code and to the seat number of the students. Some of the students also reported errors in their results as they were marked absent the exam despite being present on the day of the examination. On October 17, nearly 2300 students were awarded average marks as their answer sheets were untraceable.

Several aspirant missed DSSSB exam in confusion over the exam center

Examination for the post of primary school teacher was held by the Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board (DSSSB) in which several candidates could not sit in the exam because of the confusion over the name of the examination center. The candidates had their admit cards with address of the exam center as ' GGSSS (Government Girlsʼ Senior Secondary School), Sunder Nagri, Near Gagan Cinema, Delhi-110093' but as they reached the address, they found the board with the school name ' Government Co-ed Senior Secondary School' as a result of which candidates ran around to find the center written on the admit card and missed the reporting time.Suresh Chandra Shakya, vice-principal of the school said ' the school was recently bifurcated into girlsʼ and boysʼ schools. He said the board was old and had to be removed'.However, the denied candidates alleged that they were not allowed to enter into the center despite mistake being on the part of the school.Pooja Yadav, one of the aspirants who was not allowed to write the exam said ' I had reached the Sunder Nagri school within the reporting time, but the address on the admit card was so vague. The school which was our exam center had a co-ed board outside. At least 50 others missed the exam as we reached the venue 10 minutes late. We were shooed away by the principal as well as the DSSSB Flying Officer.' The vice-principal of the school claimed that they have put enough posters near the gate claiming the new name of the school. 'We were not able to remove the big board, but we had put up posters everywhere. Some people came late and unnecessarily created a ruckus. They even broke our school gate. We were instructed to not allow anyone inside after 12.30 pm,' Shakya said. DSSSB Chairman A C Verma, in a statement, said the “overall supervision at exam centers had been strengthened with deployment of senior-level IAS/DANICS officers” and that the exam was held in a “fair and peaceful manner”. “Stray incidents of use of blue-tooth devices by three-four candidates were reported and the culprits were handed over to police. Complaints were filed by respective center superintendents,” he added.

In an affidavit submitted in HC, BMC said ' if the Maharashtra government was planning to implement a scheme or policy granting incentives to medical employees, and in case such scheme did not have adequate promotional avenues for the assistant medical professors, then in that case, it was willing to frame an implement a policy of its own. ' The bench however, noted that the corporation can frame its own policy and there is no need to wait for the state policy. “At more places than one, this affidavit says that if the Government of Maharashtra has introduced or is implementing any Policy/scheme so as to grant an incentive or Dynamic Assured Career Progression Scheme, and in the event that promotional avenues are not available, then the Municipal Corporation will frame and implement it,” the bench said.“This means that even if the Assistant Professors in the Corporationʼs medical institutions are stagnating, the BMC will keep waiting for the state's decision,” it said. “Let the Additional Municipal Commissioner (Health) of the BMC frame a scheme and implement it for its own Assistant Professors in its Medical Institutions because it is nobody's case that the MCGM has to wait for the State's decision,” the bench said. The HC further assured that if corporation forms such a scheme, the court will ensure that there are no obstructions from the state government in its implementation.“We expect the state government to play a positive role and not obstruct the implementation of such scheme,” the bench said.

DU lacks teachers with degree in Environmental Science: RTI

Several colleges under DU are violating the direct guidelines of the UGC regarding who can teach the environmental science subject. Environmental science is a compulsory paper.According to the guidelines of UGC, only teachers with PG or above can teach the environmental science subject. However, in DU most of the teachers teaching the subject are graduates in pure science and some teachers have degrees in geography or even Hindi and history. In an RTI reply received by the All India Environmental Science Studentsʼ Union from over 40 DU colleges, the fact came to light that DU have only eight teachers with MA in environmental science. The 2014 order of the UGC states 'task of teaching the module on environmental studies be entrusted with teachers who fulfill qualifications laid down by UGC. Teaching must be carried out by faculty trained at post-graduate and PhD levels in the area of environmental studies or sciences…'In July 2015, the colleges were asked by the environmental science department to follow the directive. But according to the RTI reply, in most colleges, the subject is being taught by the teachers with degrees in botany, zoology, chemistry or physics.Following are the colleges which have teachers with the requisite degree: Kamala Nehru CollegeAurobindo College (Morning)College of Vocational StudiesShivaji CollegeDeen Dayal UpadhyayaZakir Hussain (Evening)Guru Gobind Singh College of CommerceDCAC Head of the Environmental Science department, M K Pandit, said, “When the subject was introduced… colleges were allowed to appoint teachers with relevant subjects. Maharashtra State Board: For the lack of Aadhaar card SSC and HSC form will not be rejected

The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) denied the rumors that the students who do not have aadhaar cards will not be allowed to fill the forms of class X and XII.The rumor regarding the ineligibility of candidates for not having aadhaar cards was circulated on WhatsApp and since then anxious parents and students have been calling the divisional board offices to confirm the same. “The parents and students are asking how such a decision can be made for students at the last minute. They are calling up because they have seen some WhatsApp message or heard from relatives. Even though school principals reassure them, they are worried about last minute problems. We don't know why these messages are being circulated as they add to our headache,” said an official of the state board. Shakuntala Kale, chairperson of Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) said that the rumors on Social media and Whats App are adding to the burdens of the board officials. “People are misinterpreting the board's instructions and spreading these rumours. We appeal to schools, parents and students not to heed these rumours. The board has made it clear that yes, while filling the forms, the students should fill their Aadhaar card details. If the students have only applied for it, then even the temporary receipt issued will also do. However, if a student does not have an Aadhaar card or has not applied for one, they will not be stopped from filling the forms for Class X or XII board examination at any cost. Both the department and the ministry have made it very clear,” she said. MSBSHSE issued a circular in 2016 stating students are required to enter aadhaar card number while filling the form for class 10 and 12. According to the board many students drop out in class IX. While few of them appear for class X as private students other leave studies altogether. Aadhaar card details will help in tracking such students.Submitting Aadhaar card details is still mandatory but not possessing aadhaar card will not disqualify the students from the exams.

Students in worry: Economic slowdown, lesser pay and placement season!

With placement season approaching students are gearing themselves up for a selection process but with a sense of insecurity among them. Students this year are worried that they may get low salary packages and companies may miss campus recruitment exercise this year. “Given the economic slowdown, some of us are worried that the packages offered may be lower than the previous years,” said a final year marketing student of NMIMS Universityʼs School of management. “The average pay package last year was around Rs 18 lakh per annum and the IT sector was the biggest recruiter. However, since there is an increasing trend of lay- offs in the IT industry, some of us are concerned that this year, fewer companies will turn up,” he said. One of the placement coordinators of the institute said: “There is certainly anxiety among students. Some sectors might see a slump this year but based on the summer placements this year, we are hopeful.”While MBA students are worried about few offers from the IT sectors, the students from engineering sector are worried that there may be slow recruitment exercise from the companies which are from planning and strategy sectors.“The demand in the IT sector has evolved from coders to expertise in more specific fields like artificial intelligence and data analytics. However, offers in strategic roles might be fewer this year,” said one of the placement coordinators at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.“The companies that usually come for campus placements will continue to come this year too. We are still waiting to see how many new companies sign up for placements. Of course, students are worried but our summer placements have been good and many have converted into pre-placement offers,” he added.

Onscreen assessment to continue in Mumbai University Exams

Onscreen assessment to continue in Mumbai University Exams

On Thursday, state government of Mumbai gave green signal to the Mumbai University to continue with the onscreen assessment process during the exams. The onscreen assessment process adopted by the university caused an unprecedented delay in the declaration of the results of summer semester. The appointed agency, Merittrac will continue with the onscreen assessment software but next year fresh tender will be released and a new agency will be appointed for the same. State Education Minister Vinod Tawde said that the issues in the onscreen assessment process now has been completely sorted out and therefore, the university will continue with the process. “Onscreen assessment will continue for most subjects. Answersheets of any subject which has more than 1,000 students appearing for it, will be corrected onscreen,” said Tawde.“All the problems encountered earlier have been sorted now. The entire process has been streamlined,” he added. The decision to continue with the onscreen assessment process comes two days after governor and Chancellor Ch. Vidyasagar Rao removed Sanjay Deshmukh from the post of V-C of the university, for the flawed implementation of the onscreen assessment process. “The university has a contract of one year with Merittrac. Once that is over, the process for appointing an agency will be started afresh,” the minister added. Former V-C Bhalchandra Mungekar however, appealed the university to reconsider its decision about continuing with the onscreen assessment process.“If the university still adamantly persists for online assessment, it must submit an affidavit to the Bombay High Court that it takes full responsibility to declare the results within 45 days as per the provisions in the Act with correct assessment of the answer books,” said Mungekar.
