Diwali is one of the most popular festivals of India. The festival is the represents the victory of light over darkness, the victory of good over evil. During the season of this festival everyone feels happy elated in the country. However, the celebrations of the festival often leads to significant increase in the air pollution in the country which is harmful for health and therefore, many prominent personalities and government requests the citizens of the nation to celebrate the festival of light in a safe an pollution free manner.Below are some things which every student of the nation should know about the festival of light The word 'Deepawali' is the combination of two words 'Deep' means 'light' and 'avail' means 'row'. Hence, the meaning of the name of the festival is 'row of lights' and literally people decorate their houses, windows and rooftops with candles and diyas which signified the triumph of light over darkness.In Gregorian calendar, Diwali falls between mid-October and mid-November. It falls on the 15th day of the Kartik which is a Hindu Month. Hence, the day of Diwali varies every year.During the season of the festival, as a tradition, people clean their houses and offices and renovate them.On the same night, when Hindu community celebrates Diwali, Jains, Sikhs and Newar Buddhists celebrate their own version of the festival.The festival is known by various names in various languages such as Dipawoli in Assames, Dipaboli or Dipali in Bengali, divali in Gujarati, Punjab and Hindi, Deepavali in Kannada and Malayalam, Dipabali in Odia, Diyari in Sindhi, Teepavali in Tamil and Telugu, Galungan in Balinese and Swanti in Nepali or Tihar in Nepali.The preparations and rituals of the festival extend typically over a five day period.Loud sound from fire crackers causes death, stress and terror among the strays and birds. This can be different if we decide to celebrate the festival with more responsibility. Dogs and birds are also a part of society like us and the festival is about the happiness of all including birds and dogs.Apart from India, the day of Diwali is an official holiday in countries including Fiji, Nepal, Singapore and Sri Lanka.
