Merger of 800 primary schools: Punjab opposition leader Khaira condemns the decision

Opposition leader in Punjab, Sukhpal Singh Khaira condemns the decision of Punjab government to merge the 800 elementary schools. All these schools have less than 20 students studying in them.In a statement he said that the step by the government is an extreme retrograde step and a direct violation of Right to Free Education (RTE) Act 2009, for the children belonging to weak section of the society.Khaira said that the government has decided to close the 800 schools and merge them with the school nearby. He took the opportunity to target Captain Amarinder Singh's government and said 'that instead of providing quality education and increasing the number of schools in Punjab, his government has decided to close 800 schools. It is an act of discrimination against thousands of poor children. He said by doing so, the chief minister has put the future of all those students, who study in one of those 800 schools, at risk'. He further criticized the decision saying that these children will now have to walk or travel to study in other schools."This is gross violation of the RTE Act 2009, wherein a primary school should be situated in a distance less than one kilometer. For example, small children of primary school Dere Shahpur Peera at serial no 458 of the list will now have to walk or travel five kilometers to a school in Jairampur and will have to cross the six-lane busy NH-1, besides a railway crossing," he said.LoP said the closure of the schools is a cruel joke especially, with the electorate of Gurdaspur Lok Sabha constituency where the government is shutting down 133 schools. "It seems that monetary gains seem to have taken precedence over right to free education and the livelihood of these poor children by the Congress government. It's like being “penny wise and pound foolish," Khaira said.
