Special quota in professional courses for Marathas

Special quota in professional courses for Marathas

Maratha Students who are pursuing professional courses in Maharashtra and whose family income is less than INR 6 lakh per annum may soon be brought under the category of Economically Weaker Section (EWS) which will make them eligible for the annual allowance of INR 10,000.For this purpose a cabinet sub-committee has been formed by the government which will look into the proposal and issue of Maratha reservation. A government official said "the sub-committee was deliberating on a scholarship scheme for Maratha students, similar to schemes available for EWS students. According to the proposed scheme, Maratha students from families with a household income not exceeding Rs 6 lakh annually will be eligible for a scholarship of Rs 10,000 for an academic year." He further added "The sub-committee is currently deliberating the details of the scheme such as the scholarship amount and the income capping".The proposed new scheme is aimed specifically for the Maratha students and came after students led Maratha Morchas which rocked the state earlier. 58 silent marches and road shows were held by the Marathas as they demanded reservation in jobs and educational institutions.Later on, a cabinet sub-committee was formed by the government to look into the matter. On the matter, a senior lawyer, who did not wish to be named said 'If the state government is providing sops to a certain community, it can be challenged in the court of law. The state government will have to then justify on what basis only a certain caste is eligible for the sop'.
