22 students of IIT Kanpur leave campus for ragging: Senate to review its decision
22 students of IIT Kanpur left the campus hostel on Wednesday for their alleged involvement in the ragging of the fresher students. All 22 students were suspended by the institute's senate. While leaving the campus, students requested senate to review its decision.According to the top IIT official the final decision is up to the senate whether they accept or reject the request of the students. Only 22 students faced the action, as their names were mentioned in the list. Among 22 students, 16 students have been suspended for three years and six for a period of one year. “The incident related to the ragging of freshers, which happened in August… the matter first went to the Dean of Student Affairs (DOSA). Later, an inquiry was conducted by the Senate Students Affairs Committee (SSAC), headed by DOSA and comprising eight to nine members, including student representatives. The probe report recommended to the senate, on September 21, to take action against the 22 students,” said Registrar K K Tiwari. “The senate had observed that the students should be given a chance to explain their side… However, to make sure that the 22 senior students cannot influence the investigation in any way, they were suspended,” he added.“On October 8, the seniors and first-year students were asked present their side one by one. The next day, the senate took the decision at a meeting that went on for 12 to 13 hours,” Tiwari said.
