Institutes gain status of national importance under the FDDI Act 2017



On Monday, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry C R Chaudhary said that the status of an ‘Institute of National Importance' has been granted to Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) and under its new status the institute can now grant degrees to the students without requiring the outside permission.The Minister said "this status is the result of the commitment to resolve the degree issue and to ensure FDDIʼs upgradation to an eminent position so as to enable its effective service to the sector". In July 2017, the FDDI bill was passed in the Parliament and on October 17, the FDDI Act was enforced. Chaudhary further said that now these institutes will have the power to design their own curriculum as per the industry requirements. Now, the institute can develop and conduct the courses for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Currently, the institute is imparting the UG and PG skills to students in the field of leather goods, footwear, management and retail and has 2500 students studying in its eight different campuses across the nation.Now, after the status, institute can enroll twice the number of students. Also, four new campuses will be introduced in the next academic session in Patna, Ankleshwar, Banur and Hyderabad.
