Higher education institutions to teach Vedas to be established by Kerala Temple Board

Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB), Kerala's largest temple body, is mulling over the idea to establish an exclusive college and study center where students can study the various streams of ancient knowledge like 'Veda, Vedanta and Tantra'.The college will be called Veda- Vedanta-Tantric center in Shangumugham and Veda-Vendanta College in Sasthamkotta. The college will impart knowledge in ancient India traditions and spirituality.TDB is an autonomous body and manages about 1248 shrines in Kerala including the Lord Ayyappa Temple in Sabarimala and is now looking to promote the Gurukul tradition through these two new institutions. “The Veda-Vedanta-Tantric center is planned to be set up in association with the Vivekananda University, Kolkata… It will be a unique learning platform with a national outlook… Our present plan is to start the center as an off campus unit or sub-center of that university,” TDB President Prayar Gopalakrishnan said. He further said that the colleges will be based on ancient centers of higher learning like ‘Takshashilaʼ and ‘Nalandaʼ with a hint of modern culture. He also said that the idea is still under draft but discussions are in progress and if everything goes fine, the project will be launched next year.“Kerala is one of the very few places where poojas are performed as per the tantric satadhar gama sastra… The curriculum of tantric studies in these institutions will be designed with an objective to give more strength to the philosophic stream,” Gopalakrishnan said.“We have to finalise the design and other aspects of both institutions… Only then can we step into the next phase. We hope to start one of the projects at the earliest,” he said.
