Kerala to give leave to academics to begin their startups

Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) has been given a green signal from Kerala government and under the KSUM faculty members of colleges who intend to establish their own startups can take leave from the colleges.The Kerala government passed the KSUM as this will give the members of the academic community a chance to become a part of entrepreneurship culture. According to the statement, teachers can start their own startup or can join as founder/co-founders with the students.A government official said "An expert panel, headed by KSUM CEO Saji Gopinath, will select 10 faculty members on a pilot basis for the implementation of the project".M Sivasankar, State IT Secretary said that the project is one of a kind in India. "The participation of teachers, with active support from college authorities and parents, will bring experience and responsibility in the startups," he said. "The initiative will greatly contribute to the government's determined efforts to strengthen and accelerate the startup ecosystem through active participation of the teaching community," he further said.According to the guidelines of the proposal, faculty members can get sabbatical leave from their respective institutions with or without pay. As of now, the scheme is only open to the regular teachers.
