Directors for 11 NITs appointed by the government

On Tuesday, the government appointed new directors to the 11 National Institutes of Technology (NITs) including NIT-Warangal and NIT-Durgapur. Both, NIT-Warangal and NIT-Durgapur have been functioning without director for over a year.Apart from appointing the directors for the above two institutes, the President office has approved the appointment of directors for the NITs in Arunachal Pradesh, Agartala, Jamshedpur, Nagaland, Patna, Raipur, Silchar, Srinagar and Uttarahand. Out of the 11 appointees, two appointees are professors from IITs and five are teaching at NITs. For NIT Durgapur, Anupam Basu, a professor at the department of computer science engineering in IIT Kharagpur has been appointed as the director. In the past, Anupam has taught at the University of California, Irvine, and University of Guelph, Ontario as visiting faculty.NIT Warangal's new director is NV Ramana Rao who is currently the Rector of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University in Hyderabad. He is a teacher in civil engineering stream and attained his Bachelor's degree in engineering from Osmania University, M.Tech from IIT Delhi and Ph.D from the UK.There was delay in appointing the directors for the NIT Warangal and NIT Durgapur as cabinet was reshuffled in July 2016 and Smriti Irani was shifted to Textile Ministry. The names finalized during the Irani's term were scrapped as they were found unsuitable for the posts and both the posts were advertised again.
