SPPU lowering the cut-off percentage as fewer students cleared the Law courses
Officials of the SPPU university are considering the possibility of lowering the cut-off percentage for the passing the law course among other things.Speaking to media-persons on Wednesday, Vice-Chancellor Dr N R Karmalkar said "two days ago, a meeting was held to discuss the various problems faced by the law faculty".The meeting was attended by the principals and representatives of law colleges, the dean of the faculty of humanities and officials of the exam department. “The meeting was arranged to discuss the various problems before the law faculty. One of them is that the pass percentage of law students is extremely low. About 8 to 10 per cent students pass in the first year, and about 18-20 per cent in the second year. It is a serious issue and there was a dialogue on how to improve these numbers,” said Karmalkar. When it comes to suggest the ways to improve the pass percentage, most of the representatives of the law colleges suggested to low passing cut-off for the course. In the first two years of the five year law course the passing cut-off in individual subject is 35 percent and 40 percent aggregate. In the remaining three years, students need 35 percent in the individual subject and 50 percent aggregate for passing the course. “The cut-off pass percentage for Pune University is higher than other universities… that's what we are given to understand. A proposal has been made to lower the cut-off pass percentage, maybe to an uniform 40 per cent. The proposal will be sent to the Vice-Chancellor first for consideration, after which it will be presented before the academic council,” said Ashok Chavan, controller of examination, SPPU.
