NIOS Training: Maximum number of applicants from private schools

According to the state government, majority of teachers from West Bengal who have applied with National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) for the teachers' training course are working in the private schools. NIOS is an autonomous institute under the Ministry of Human Resource Development recently published that near about 15 lakh teachers have applied for the two-year diploma in elementary education (D.El.Ed.). The two-year diploma in elementary education (D.El.Ed.) is being offered by the NIOS. As of now, nearly 12 lakh teachers have paid for the course and out of these nearly 9 lakh teachers are working in various private schools. Speaking to The Indian Express, West Bengal Primary Education Board chairman, Manik Bhattacharya said, “Most of the applicants from the state are from private schools. Teachers in state-run schools in West Bengal are trained through teacher training programs. Even the state government provides training for para-teachers at free of cost.” “Only three months ago, the Centre decided to provide training to private school teachers. Earlier, training was only provided to government school teachers. As there was no teachers training program for them, private school teachers have been waiting for this opportunity. As soon as the Centre came up with the training program, a large number of private teachers have sought application. The state government had no role in this," Bhattacharya said.
