Transgender community to be included in the co-ed technical institutes
In a recent announcement AICTE has mandated all the technical institutes to admit transgender students, weather boy or girl, alike. The step has been taken by the AICTE for up-lifting the transgender community. In its approval process handbook The All India Institute for Technical Education (AICTE) has come up with a new definition for the "co-ed institutions." The AICTE handbook has mandated all the technical institutions to admit the transgender boys and girls along with other boys and girls. The AICTE handbook prescribes the norms and standards for the technical institutions which seek AICTE approval and currently there are 3,000 institutions (technical) registered under the AICTE. According to the AICTE chairman Anil Sahasrabudhe, this move will make it easy for the transgender community to pursue technical education without identifying them as male or female. “It will also ensure that transgender students don't face any discrimination,” said a senior official. The official further added "the HRD ministry had earlier communicated the order to maintain separate data at every institute as the new definition is included in the handbook." The Supreme Court in 2014, allowed the admission of the transgender students into educational institutions and into employment on the basis of their third category. The UGC directed all the institutions to include transgender column in the all their applications and documents. It also asked the institutions to make sure that all transgender are properly inducted and face no discrimination on the basis of gender in their institutions.
