Universities and colleges tweak their syllabus to include GST in curriculum

With the launch of new tax regime, GST, not only PM Narendra Modi launched the new syllabus for CAs of the country but, the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) and even independent colleges are working on tweaking their syllabus of all taxation and accountancy related syllabus. Even though the provisions of GST are still unclear, many academicians believe that it is major tax reform in the country and needs to be introduced for the commerce students.SPPU is currently working on setting a committee which will not only include professors but CAs and industry professionals as well which will help in bringing the GST to the students. “The process has already started. Since direct and indirect taxation is an important aspect of many commerce courses, it is critical to add it to the syllabus and the university has already started the process for it. The expert committee will review the existing syllabus and then design the GST-related curriculum aspect. It should take about 2-3 months for this process to be completed. By the next semester, we should expect GST to become a part of the syllabus to be offered in all courses of commerce where taxation and accounting is a component,” he said. Apart from SPPU, autonomous colleges are also in process of including GST in their current syllabus. While, autonomous colleges are working their way up to introduce the new tax reform in the curriculum. Non-autonomous colleges affiliated with the SPPU said that they cannot introduce the changes university revises the syllabus. BMCC college principal, Chandrakant Rawal said that they will introduce a certification course on GST in July end. “We are in the process of signing an MoU with an industry expert for conducting this course,” he said.
