Himachal Pradesh to bring reforms to its education system

Himachal Pradesh government has started a new program which aims at identifying the problems and challenges in order to find out the solutions so that the standard of education I primary schools in the state can be improved. A government spokesperson told that so far the government has reviewed more than 5000 schools and visited over 11,000 classrooms covering 2.91 lakh students.Visited schools were assessed by the reviewing officers on the basis of five parameters--basic school infrastructure, classroom observations, school management, funds utilization and assessment results. The spokesperson further said "this has been possible due to the initiative of the state which has replaced the existing lengthy and cumbersome review system with comprehensive two page optical mark reading (OMR) form." These forms allow the immediate digitization of the data which helps in immediate identification of the problems as a result necessary actions can be taken instead of indulging in fault finding and endless discussions. The spokesperson further said "The actions decided upon in the state review meetings are tracked via a detailed action point tracker, thus ensuring that reviews don't become a paper exercise but actually translate into quality improvement on the ground." Each district has also been issued a letter from the state government which contains the list of schools which needs improvement in that district. The government has also started the distribution of the free textbooks across the state to all the students. According to the report "Not only the state has the highest rate of children who can read a standard II level of text in the country, it also ranks first on the basis of students who are competent to read stories meant for standard V students".
