Three language formula: CBSE likely to exclude the foreign languages
From the next academic session, foreign languages such as German and French may not be included by CBSE in three language formula. It is believed that HRD ministry has communicated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) that students who are keen on learning foreign languages should take them as a fourth fifth language. "Languages which are listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution should be taught under the three language formula, while languages which are 'purely foreign' should be taught as a 'fourth language' as an elective subject," a source said. What is a three language formula?Under the national education policy, the three language formula requires students in Hindi speaking states to learn a modern language, apart from Hindi and English and in non-Hindi speaking states it requires students to learn Hindi along with the regional language and English. However, majority of schools affiliated with the CBSE offer mother tongue or Hindi, English and a foreign language such as German, French up to class 8.Last December, CBSE sent the proposed three language formula to HRD ministry and has major differences. One, the three language formula now applies till class 10 and second, it does away with the foreign language as an option for the students.
